Book Review #4 - Yes, Please and Bossypants

Book Review #3 - Cinder, Scarlet, & Cress (The Lunar Chronicles)

Hello and welcome to book review number 4 for the 2016 Reading Challenge!

This week's review is brought to you by: super hilarious female comedians!

I am pretty behind on my reading challenge, but I've got two more to check off my list, which is exciting and makes me happy. I grew up watching Saturday Night Live and it brought me great joy to read two books from two of my favorite actresses. Usually, I tend to stay away from ?autobiographies? because, as I explain regularly, I live in reality and deal with it enough, I'll leave reality out here and my books can remain fantasy and sci-fi-y and magical. Thankyouverymuch.

Let's jump right on into it!

Yes, Please by Amy Poehler
Category: A Book Written by a Comedian
Rating: 10/10
Summary: Hilarious, comical, relatable, inspiring

Yes, Please was a delightful read. I enjoyed Amy Poehler's writing although she didn't seem to enjoy writing the book. There are a few different things I liked about this book, which I will go into detail below. I loved her comedic approach on some things, her real bits of life, and how she got where she is.

Her comedic approach was hilarious. I love her sense of humor more than I can describe. She has a very dry, straight-forward sense of humor. She's blunt but also ironically over-dramatic. There's something about her writing style that makes her book easy to read, kind of like you're reading a blog. I love books like this specifically because that's how I write as well. I don't try to be someone I'm not, I write how I talk, which is sarcastic, blunt, and humorously. Good job Amy!

Her real bits of life that she wrote about I absolutely loved. She talked briefly about her divorce, she lovingly talked about her kids, she talked about her insomnia, and her fear of getting older. I could relate to her feelings, which I am so glad she openly talked about. Sometimes I have these moments of relief when I read that someone as successful as Amy Poehler has the same fears that I do. It makes me feel less alone, by being able to connect with someone I didn't think I would normally connect with.

Lastly, her career path is so interesting! I had no idea that the comedians from Saturday Night Live adult-ed in the same circles, if that makes sense? She talks about Louis CK, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, and other super well-known comedians and actors and how she met them "back in the day" and how their friendships grew. She also talked about her experience with Parks and Recreation which is a show I have not watched much of but I have seen enough to know it's hilarious. It's so cool to see the "backstage" of a celebrity's life and how crazy yet normal it seems!

So to wrap this review up: I admire Amy Poehler's honesty and humor in this book. I love how she wrote about her growing up and loving acting from the beginning, how she went to school and how she started her improv career. I enjoyed her talking about her personal life to expose how she is just as normal as anyone else and deals with the same things we do. I appreciated her talking about her two major careers (SNL and Parks and Rec) and her experience with them. It was an easy and delightful read, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a little inspiration.

Bossypants by Tina Fey
Category: A Book Written by a Celebrity
Rating: 10/10
Summary: Also hilarious, comical, relatable, inspiring

Bossypants was equally hilarious to Yes, Please. I love Tina Fey's writing immensely. She is hilarious but I can tell there is an air to her, a confidence that I admire.

Her book was more like snippets of her life, all the way from her childhood to when the book was published. Some of them defined her choices in life, some were bits of life advice, and some were just humorous stories that made you laugh.

Tina openly talked about what it was like to be a woman in the entertainment industry. She talked about her assets and her flaws, her adorable daughter and home life, she talked about meeting celebrities and working with them, as well as her famous 6-week Sarah Palin impersonation career. She talked about her career at Saturday Night Live as well as her production of 30 Rock, a show that I will openly admit I have never watched and know nothing about.

So to wrap this review up: Because I would be completely redundant in this review about how much I admire her talking about her normalcy and her realness with heavy doses of humor injected in the writing as well, then I will leave the rest to your imagination and suggest that you go buy the book.
